Clayhill Motorsports
4th Annual Street Stock Championship
Sept. 28, 29, & 30

 By: Jonathan Gowan, Trezevant, TN

Atwood, TN: The “Atwood Outlaw,” T.J. Herndon took the $6000 to win 50-lap Championship event by storm and come away from Clayhill with yet another victory!! After the two B-main events, and the Dash for Cash were run, the field was set for 50 laps of great racing action with #9K, Jared Wagster from Scott City, MO on the pole, and #96, Robby Arnold from Paragould, AR on the outside front row.

Robby Arnold stepped out front to lead for 37 laps until something in the motor department went a little bit wrong. On lap 38, T.J. Herndon #15X took the lead, with Robby Arnold falling back to 6th position where he would ride for 2 laps before his car regained a little strength. As Robby worked his way back to the front, on lap 42, he passed #87K Kevin Salter from Batesville, AR for 3rd place, leaving Salter going home with a 4th place finish from an 11th place starting position. After going to the rear on about lap 7, #95, Bruce Sutterfield from Bono, AR, made his charge back to the front settling into the 5th position on lap 43 where he would stay for the remaining 7 laps. From lap 38 to the end, T.J. Herndon never looked back taking the victory over the #30 car of Garrett Mann from Jackson, TN, followed by #96, Robby Arnold, #87K, Kevin Salter, and in 5th, #95, Bruce Sutterfield!!! ces have been run and the line-up for the 50 Lap feature is coming together with 16 cars locked into the main event on Sat. Night.  After transferring the top 4 in each heat race, the main event looks to be a great show with some strong competition throughout the first 8 rows.

Back closer to the beginning of the night, we ran two B-main events with the top 3 transferring into the main event. B-main #1 was one of the most exciting races of the year at Clayhill with #81 Jerry Buck, and #54A Tony Anglin battling hard for the top spot while #26S Ashley Newman was trying hard to hold onto the last and final transfer spot from this B-main. Near the end of this 20-lap B-main #9 R.J. Emison, who had been waiting for that right moment to pounce, reached out and stole that final transfer spot from Ashley Newman while staying on the high side where he had made that pass to also steal 2nd place from Jerry Buck, leaving Buck with the final transfer spot and Ashley Newman with the agony of having to watch the 2nd B-main to see if he would make it in the feature by falling back on time trials!

B-main #2 seen Gideon, Missouri’s, Johnny Houart #66 bounce back from a blown engine on Friday night to ease his way into the main event by capturing the B-main #2 win followed by #3 Jarrett Melton, and #11SR Kyle Berry. With Houart making it in through the B-main, Ashley Newman from the first B-main, was able to breathe a sigh of relief knowing that he was the next in line to make it into the show by falling back on his time trails from Thursday night.

After the B-mains were run, the heat winners from Friday night stepped out onto the track for the Sonic of Milan, Dash for Cash. This dash not only paid $200 to win, but it also set the first four starting positions for the main event. Jared Wagster took the dash win, the $200, and the pole starting spot for the feature, followed by Robby Arnold, T.J. Herndon, and Mike Ainley. The first 11 rows were set and we took a look back at the Street Stock points and the Hobby class points from our Clayhill weekly points racing and determined that Dale Nelson Jr. #96 and Richard Holmes #80 would fill the points transfer spots with the top time non-qualifier, Ashley Newman all alone to start in row 13.

As an added attraction to the show, the Open Wheel Modified class was to run 30 laps for a $1000 payday. Just as the feature race was nearing lap 19, the skies parted and the rain began to fall forcing the officials to cut this race short, quick, due to cars beginning to slide all over the track. The race ended on lap 22, only 8 laps shy of the intended 30 with T.J. Herndon capturing the win.
